Our Responsibility
written by AUDREY I am staring at the white tiled floor and I hear the faint squeak of carts going back and forth. I put my hands on my chair which is as cold as ice. I can see people are trying to smile at me, but I feel that it is weak, and it makes me uncomfortable. I knew this hospital was cleaned often due to the smell of Clorox. It also had an antiseptic smell. The doctor came out and shook his head. My brain turned numb. My jaw opened wide as an elephant. I was thinking, “I knew it. His time is up.” Stupid Covid! Why didn’t the other person wear a mask? Why didn’t daddy wear one either? The tears were overwhelming my eyes as I felt the sadness creep into my body. I realized that all the things my friends, teachers, and the government said about masks were because they cared. I learned that day masks might be uncomfortable, but they save lives by helping block the spread of COVID-19. You are probably thinking that this story is sad and talks about the importance of masks. You might think this is untrue, but it is not! Someone from Ohio who said he didn’t want to wear a mask died because of COVID-19, but he didn’t die because he didn’t wear a mask. He died because others didn’t wear a mask and he didn’t wear one either. Wearing a mask doesn’t protect you per se; it protects others from being infected by you. When you wear a mask, you are saving lives and when others wear a mask, they are saving your life because your mask contains your spit and saliva from spreading. However, if you choose not to wear a mask, you will probably end up wearing an oxygen mask in the hospital instead. Remember this as well: COVID IS A TRANSMISSIBLE VIRUS THROUGH CLOSE PERSONAL CONTACT WITHIN 6FT PROXIMITY OF EACH OTHER. The idea of wearing a mask is not favored by many; it’s a very stuffy and uncomfortable but it gives you protection that may save your life and somebody else’s. So, the question is this: how important is your life and others around you?

This month I am going to talk about a White Giraffe found in Kenya, and about a new-found dangerous substance called PFAS. This is the AUDREY4CARE Environmental News Report. I am Audrey Kim. Extremely rare white giraffe gets tracker after poachers killed its family Welcome to AUDREY4CARE, your source of Environmental News and Headlines from around the world! Scientists discovered a white giraffe and they also found out that his family was killed by the poachers. Therefore to protect him they fitted him with a tracking device in the Ishaqbini Hirola Community Conservancy in Kenya in November. The tracking device will show where he is on an hourly basis and this should help to keep him safe from poachers. There were only four white giraffes ever found; the third one was found in Tanzania in 2015, and the other two a female and a calf were killed by poachers. These giraffes are white because of a rare genetic condition which is called leucism which makes its skin color lighter than most giraffes. Because of this the giraffe has a high possibility of getting poached. First of all the giraffe's coat is easily seen. Secondly, the giraffe’s coat would be very expensive in the Underground or another name for it is the Black Market. Now let’s talk about poaching. Poaching is bad, bad, bad. Poachers only poach because they want money, turn the animals into trophies, and because they think it’s fun!? This is soo wrong. This shouldn’t be happening. We must work to stop this together, we can’t do this alone, therefore let’s do it together!! 'Dark Waters' attorney: New 'forever' chemicals pose threat to environment, human health PFAS PFAS is a huge problem and we need to recognize that. What is PFAS you might ask, it is short for Polyfluoroalkyl substances, or you might have heard them referred to as “Forever Chemicals" they were called that because they never ever biodegrade. Pfas didn’t exist until world war 2 and they are used for shampoo, non-stick cookware, paints, photography, pesticides, fast food packagings, and stain resistance products. These chemicals sometimes get into water which then becomes contaminated. If people drink this water they run the risk of low birth weight babies, bad effects to the immune system, and possibly cancer. A way that we can stop this is by using a different chemical called GenX. We have to work hard together and let’s make PFAS and all the illnesses it causes go “poof” Thanks for watching. This is the AUDREY4CARE Environmental News Report. I am Audrey Kim. Hope you and everyone watching around the world has a happy and healthy Christmas Holiday. See you in a month! |
